The following was copied from “Graves County, Kentucky – History & Families” written by the Graves County Genealogical Society, page 251.

GARRIGUS/BUTLER – James “Mr Jim” Bedford Garrigus (the oldest of three children) was born May 25, 1889 in Henry County, Tennessee to James Leonard Garrigus and Parlena McClure. His children and grandchildren called him “Papa”. He and Laura Mae Butler married on January 16, 1913 in Obion County, Tennessee. He farmed all his life and is remembered going off toward the barn with his milk bucket, whistling all the way. Guineas strolled throughout the yard and across the fields. The mulberry tree in the front yard was one of the favorite places for the grandchildren to play. In his latter years he would sit on his lounge chair in front of the window watching the traffic.

Mr Jim placed his church membership at Mt Pleasant Church of Christ in July of 1917 at which time his wife was baptized. He walked to church every Sunday, until his health would not permit it. A heart attack took his life on September 30, 1968 in Graves County, Kentucky and he is buried at Mt Pleasant Cemetery in southern Graves County.  Laura Mae “Ms Mae” Butler was the daughter of Sam Butler and Laura Faulkner and was born February 18, 1897 in Graves County, Kentucky. Her children and grandchildren called her “Mama”.

Ms Mae lost her eyesight in one eye in October of 1945 and lost her eyesight in her other eye in October of 1946 In spite of it all, she insisted on doing her own cooking and housecleaning. In the pantry she had all her canned goods marked in some special way so that she would know what she was about to open and cook. She had a policy of having a place for everything and returning everything to its place when finished with it. Her granddaughter, Patricia Garrigus, would go over to stay a few days with her and help her clean out the pantry and do the spring-cleaning. Mama died on January 5, 1974 in Paducah, Kentucky and is buried at Mt Pleasant Cemetery. Her children were: Ila Estelle, Vodie Marshall, Annie Grace Bell, James Samuel, Fannie B was the fifth child of Jim and Mae. She was born in 1920, and died 1921. She was buried at Mt Pleasant Cemetery.
